Abstract This paper discusses the FMS production planning and scheduling problems and proposes a decision support system( FMSDS ) for those problems. FMSDS consists of data handling modules, production planning module, system performance collection module, scheduling module and simulation module. The key function of FMSDS is production planning. Because of the complexity of production planning problems, two alternative solution strategies are suggested. In the first solution strategy which is called "solution strategy with existing planning hierarchy ", the production planning problem is considered as part type selection, loading and loading adjustment problems. And then formulation and multiple loop solution algorithms are developed considering the hierarchical relationships between subproblems. In the second solution strategy which is called "solution strategy with modified planning hierarchy", the production planning problem is divided into routing, part type selection, and tool solution strategies, this thesis illustrated numerical examples according to the solution strategies and loading objectives. Also, comparisons of system performances resulting from the combinations of solution strategies are given by employing steady-state simulation techniques. The solution strategy with modified planning hierarchy performs far better than those with existing planning hierarchy. So, total throughput increased about 10-16^% and the job tardiness greatly decreased. Finally, with reference to the Chen´s model, one of the rare research results considering integrated production planning problems for FMS, the model proposed in this dissertation shows better system performances than the Chen´ model does. The system performances of solution strategy with existing planning hierarchy are as good as or equal to those of the Chen´s model in production quantity but much better in job tardiness. The system performances of solution strategy with modified planning hierarchy, however, are even better than those of the Chen´s model in both throughput and job tardiness.
