Abstract This thesis with production planning problems for a new kind of automated production system, say, a flexible machining and assembly system(FMAS). The purpose of this thesis is to develop procedures for solving production planning problems relating to an FMAS. Each of the procedures considers many relevant factors and constraints imposed by an FMAS. At first, mathematical models are presented. Due to the extensive computational efforts needed to solve the models, it seems inappropriate to apply the models to the real world problems directly. Thus, a hierarchical and sequential scheme where the total problem is subdivided and then conquered is proposed. A practical example is presented and solved by both the mathematical models and the scheme presented in this thesis. And the performances of two methods are examined.
