Abstract In this thesis, a decision support system which decides the number of machines and its functions of the FMSs is developed. The proposed system want to solve FMSs design problem by emphasizing two aspects : First, to design an FMS within the restriction of initial investment funds. Second, to meet demand requirements and to consider the change of order requirements. The concept of flexibility is first introduced, and then, the concepts of costs, total throughputs and other performance criteria are further developed. These concepts enables us to eliminate the wastes in time and cost and in trial and error in the design of FMS. A simulation study is, applied to evaluate the performance of selected design decisions. The proposed system uses rule-based approach to improve already selected configuration. Also a case example for FMS design is included.
