Abstract This research is concerned with the development of a distributed control scheme for the effective operation of a Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS). The proposed control architecture is, for the validation purpose, compared with other architectures discussed in several literatures: especially with the hierarchical one and the centralized one. Our system is based on the extension of the bidding-based model which can improve the efficiency of the system and prevent deadlock while maintaining the autonomy of the material handling system. We adopted a client-server model for scheduling and communication, which enabled us to reduce the problems associated with the increase in the communication load and realize real-time control of the system. Our system is designed to take the form of a simulator which can be converted easily into a shop floor control software. The proposed scheme was implemented in a real FMS which is located in the Automation and Systems Research Institute located within Seoul National University in Korea.
