Abstract In this thesis, a heuristic algorithm for group scheduling is proposed. The target system is job-shop type cell composed of multiple machines. At each machine, the setup time for each part family is changed by operation sequences. The proposed heuristic algorithm has important characteristics. First, the algorithm uses the concept of group characteristic value in which patterns of part families are considered. Second, The concept of group sequence decision value which contains operation sequence information is considered in the proposed algorithm. To evaluate the proposed heuristic algorithm, three kinds of performance criterion is used. Three kinds of performance criterion are average tardiness, average number of tardy jobs and mean flow time. Through simulation study, we find that the proposed algorithm shows a good result compared with other heuristic algorithm in three kinds of performance criterion.
