Abstract Bills Of Materials(BOM) is the one of the most important data in development of information system of a manufacturing company. But Most companies have not managed and maintained their BOM effectively in comparison with the importance of themselves due to the great amount of related data and the absence of appropriate maintenance methods.
Two main problems which mostly prevent the effective BOM management can be selected among the others. One is the enormous amount of data to be dealt with and the other is inconsistency and incorrectness of data. These two problems are mainly caused by the increasing complexities and varieties of products which a company deal with. However, the conditions that most companies are asked to use multiple BOMs with different shape or anything else - from now on we will call them multiple views - in order to fulfill the different requirements of the different business functions such as Engineering, Manufacturing, or Sales etc. can be the another main cause. These companies have not been managed multple views integratedly but stored each view separately and maintained them independently using different softwares and hardwares. These have caused lots of duplications and inconsistencies in data.

In order to resolve the problem of a great amount of data, Modular BOM, Generative BOM, Variant BOM, and etc. were devised. But they were mainly focused to the increasing complexities and varieties of products, so they could not resolve the problem of huge and inconsistent data caused by separately maintained multiple views. Therefore, We introduce an integrated BOM management system managing multiple views integratedly. This system will not only reduce the amount of data but also reduce the incorrectness and the inconsistency in data. The aim of this research is to provide the structure of integrated BOM management system consisting of a common database schema and supporting multiple views used in different areas of business functions.

We decomposed the structure of the proposed system into four layers respecting ANSI-SPARC database three level schema and designed each layer. Four layers are external layer, conceptual layer, logical layer, and physical layer. At external layer, functional requirements were defined and specified. They are decomposed into BOM definition, data management, and analysis. BOM definition is re-decomposed into product structure definition and multiple view definition, data management is re-decomposed into part data classification and historical data management, and analysis is composed of BOM explosion and implosion. At conceptual layer, some data models were proposed supporting the functionalities listed at external layer and represented by UML´s class diagram. At this layer, to support the part structure definition, we proposed ´Part´ and ´PartStructure´ entities and to support the historical data management, we also proposed ´Revision´ and ´Version´ entities. And we resolved the multiple views definition functionality using ´Qualification´, ´Context´, and ´Qualified´ entities and proposed a framework to develop the part classification scheme using the two key classification concepts used in GT. And, we used HSPN method for effective BOM explosion and implosion and extended it to support multiple views. At logical layer and physical layer, we designed database schema considering the relational database model.
