Abstract FMS is a very complex structure in which numerical control machines, robots, material handling systems, communication networks and operational softwares are closely related. In order to control FMSs having such a complex structure, many good researches have been developed for efficient control and operations of FMS. This thesis proposes a layered architecture for the control of cells as well as communication networks and material handling systems in FMS. This thesis consists of two parts. One is macrostructure which reveals the links between cells and other components. The other is a microstructure which allows to identify and analyze the entities which is the components of macrostructure. By using these two closely related conceptual structures proposed in the thesis, we can develop practical control programs of FMS in a very efficient and timely manner.
