abstract In this paper, the quantitative impact of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in a supply chain is studied using a simulation and cost model. We compare RFID technology with barcode technology in terms of operational cost and system investment cost. To figure out the operational changes through the RFID employment, we modeled a supply chain consisting of supplier, manufacturer, distributor, and retailer. The model considers receiving, storing, picking, shipping, and replenishing operations. System investment cost for the RFID technology includes software and hardware costs where fixed costs are amortized over the life-span of the system. Cost analysis on the RFID employment reveals that the investment cost can be safely returned in our supply chain model, which supports other similar study results.
