abstract When trying to solve a flexible manufacturing cell (FMC) scheduling problem in certain types of industrial situation, not only the routing and sequencing problems but also the availability of pallets and loading/unloading (L/U) stations could be considered. In those situations, scheduling problems are constrained by the number of pallets, pallet operation policies and L/U station conditions because each job requires a setup with different types of pallets, which are performed at L/U stations.
In this study, overall scheduling process and several heuristic algorithms based on priority rules which utilize the information of pallets and L/U stations are introduced to generate good production schedules. The makespans of the machining centers and L/U stations are considered in a hierarchical manner. Considering practical shop environments, several types of transient disturbances such as preventive maintenance and machine breakdown are considered and several rescheduling methods are suggested
