Abstract The performance properties of the so-called priority rules have been widely studied using the simulation methodology. Most of these study results show that there is no single priority rule that is globally better than all the others. An expert system for selecting priority rule is an important component in the development of an expert scheduling system, where a priority rule is dynamically selected using a knowledge base. In this study, the configuration of a factory is programmed using SIMAN/CINEMA simulation language. The various order information is given and the system state ( at input time ) is set, and then various priority rules are simulated. The priority rules are compared on the basis of certain performance measures. After these results are recorded in the database, a knowledge base is constructed using an attribute-oriented learning method. The knowledge base is used for the development of a scheduling expert system. The result of this study can be used to schedule a job-shop plant on-line or off-line, and any arbitrary plant can be run efficiently with less effort expended in controlling the plant.
