Keyword FMS, Computer and Database Location, A Group Formation Problem
Abstract Design of distributed computer systems is a complex task requiring solutions for several difficult problems. These problems involve determining number and size of computer facilities and their locations, configuring databases and allocating these databases computer facilities. Location of computing resources and databases in a wide-area network is one of these problems which has not yet been solved satisfactorily. In the past these problems were formulated using mathematical programming models, but in this paper, the problem is transformed as that of a group formation problem. A very efficient heuristic solution procedure is developed and an example problem is solved using this procedure. Computational experience with this procedure is reported.
