abstract | In spite of increasing interests in Open Innovation, most previous studies have been intended for managers in technology-based and large companies, where the first notion of open innovation has been based on. Consequently, the discussion on the concept and possibility of open innovation in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) has been excluded from the main stream. However, as the argument on the effect of firm size on the effectiveness of innovation is still ongoing, it is worth addressing the particularities of open innovation from the perspective of SMEs. This article, therefore, focuses on SMEs, firstly seeking to place the concept of open innovation in the theoretical and practical tradition associated with SMEs, and secondly introducing success stories of Korean SMEs through the intermediary called KICMS. The research results are expected to provide the notion of open innovation in SMEs by indicating one possible way to facilitate the innovation via an effective networking of SMEs. |
