abstract | This paper describes research on design of scheduling architectures and strategies which can be used in a distributed coordination environment for control of flexible manufacturing systems(FMSs). Coordination between shop-level and cell-level controllers is accomplished through client/server interaction in which the shop-level controller acts as a client requesting a necessary manufacturing operation and the cell-level controller performs the operation as a service. In this environment, each manufacturing cell controller has its own scheduler and supervisor to improve production efficiency while retaining operational safeness. The scheduler is responsible for deciding the next job to do among the waiting list for each manufacturing cell. To overcome nearsightedness of conventional scheduling rules, two look-ahead scheduling strategies are devised. |
